The UMAX Ahkio Sled exists for winter operations where longer loads, rigid cargo, or CASEVAC patient-support configurations demand a sled platform optimized specifically for length, stability, and load control. In expedition logistics, rescue scenarios, and professional winter operations, control and predictability matter more than speed or weight savings.
The extended hull length allows for better load distribution, improved downhill control, and reduced pitch when braking or traversing uneven terrain—making the U-MAX suitable for freight hauling, equipment transport, and patient-support configurations.
Rated for -65°F and below. Cold-soak impact tested to extreme temperatures (down to approximately -109°F) with no structural failure.
History of Wilderness Engineering XLPE Hull Use
XLPE (Cross-Linked High-Density Polyethylene) is one of the most fielded sled materials in U.S. military history, with over 10,000 Wilderness Engineering systems deployed worldwide over more than 30 years. It was deliberately chosen over rigid materials like fiberglass, epoxy composites, standard HDPE, and standard polyethylene because of its rare combination of toughness, cold-weather strength, and controlled flexibility in extreme cold. The manufacturing process results in an ultra-durable plastic without weak points in critical corners and edges.
Military Performance
Built to handle rough operational environments, it offers a proven track record of durability across demanding field conditions. When pulled behind a high-speed snowmobile, a fully loaded sled repeatedly slams into hidden rocks, frozen ruts, and rough terrain. Rather than using a stiff shell that can crack, split, or break apart under heavy impacts, XLPE flexes to absorb shock and snaps back into shape. To ensure steady handling, the material combines the natural slickness of polyethylene for easy sliding with an engineered surface texture that helps the sled dig into side hills resulting in unyielding dependability.
Built for U.S. Military

Personnel may come from regions with little experience in snow or extreme cold, so the equipment must perform reliably across a wide range of skill levels and familiarity. Our systems are designed to withstand hard use, accidental misuse, hot-container storage, worldwide transport, and demanding field conditions. Built for military maintenance cycles, the system uses common hardware where possible and simple Wilderness Engineering replacement parts for easy unit-level service.
U-MAX Ahkio is 87" x 25" x 16", with a hull weight of 28 lb / 12.7 kg and 1,000 liters of capacity with the full roll-top configuration. The removable bag weighs 8.2 lb / 3.7 kg, and the longer, heavier-duty pole and harness system weighs 5.6 lb / 2.5 kg.
